Basic tools and components

Breadboard

Is a very useful tool that allows to create connections between electronic components without soldering them. That’s why it’s ideal for prototyping, each connection can be easily and quickly changed.

Types of breadboard

Breadboards come in different sizes. In particular there are mainly 3 standard sizes, based on the number of “points”:
- 830 points
- 400 points
- 170 points

The Circuit Pro advice

You’ll need at least 2 breadboards with 830 points each (1 might be enough for some projects). More is always better, you can work on new circuits without removing old ones.

Breadboard wires

Are what you’ll use to make the connections between the components on the breadboard.

Types of wires

You can choose between 2 options:
- male to male jumpers: ready and easy to use, they have a limited set of lengths. Because of this, they will stay tall on your breadboard and large circuits will look really messy.
- solid wires kit: ready to use, they come with many different lengths so you'll be able to keep them at the breadboard surface, making everything look clean.

The Circuit Pro advice

Solid wires kit solution is preferred because you’ll have a cleaner circuit and easier to inspect.

Power Supply

In order to have your circuit working, of course, you’ll need a constant supply voltage, given by a power supply. Let’s see which you can use for our projects.

What type of power supply do you need?

For our projects, a supply voltage of 5V will always be ok. We also won’t need very high power, so any 5V / 1A power supply is ok (or more current-capable). For your first projects, you won’t need a professional power supply, so let’s see what you can use (or see the section below if you want a more advanced one).
- Breadboard power supply module: a small board that you can insert directly in your breadboard, powering the power supply lines. You’ll only need a USB power supply for it, this is a very good option for beginners.
- Arduino board: if you already have an Arduino board, you can use its regulated supply voltage to power your circuit.

The Circuit Pro advice

Roughly speaking, anything that gives you 5V/1A on your breadboard is ok, but if this is your first experience, just use one of the methods above (or in this section).

Digital multimeter

It’s an essential tool whenever you are working with electronic circuits that allows. as the name says, to measure different parameters such as voltage and resistance. It will be your best friend during any troubleshooting phase.

What multimeter do you need?

There are plenty of different multimeters on the market, changing in feature, precision and reliability. Because of this, I will present you different solutions to choose from:
- extra-low-cost: a multimiter that will do its job, without high precision (can be enough for our applications) and that comes with just the basic features and cheap construction materials.
- low-cost: a multimiter that will do its job, without good precision (surely enough for our applications) and that comes with many features and descrete construction materials.
- expensive: check out the section below (not what you need as beginner).

The Circuit Pro advice

The extra-low-cost multimiter it’s probably enough at the beginning, but if you plan to deal with electronics for a while, consider buying at least the low-cost one.

Kits as alternatives

Instead of buying breadboard, wires and power supply module independently, a good option is to buy a kit that includes all of them plus various electronic components that are always useful both for your own projects and the ones from The Circuit Pro.

What does a kit include

In general, these kits include (in addition to breadboard, wires and power supply) several capacitors and resistors of different values, push buttons, LEDs, LDRs, diodes, transistors etc...
(To know exactly the content of the kits, please click on the buttons below and check directly on the store page).

The Circuit Pro Advice

If, at the moment, you don't have any electronic component, this is the best option for you. You will have a basic hardware stock and you'll get acquainted to various types of components.

Professional multimiter

If you need your measures to be very precise and accurate, the multimeters linked above might not be enough.

For electronics and electrical applications, the best choice is the Fluke 115. Fluke is a leader manufacturer in electronic measurement tools, while the model 115 is the best you can choose for this money, featuring measurement of true-rms voltage and current with 6000 count resolution, plus resistance, continuity, frequency and capacitance. It also has a large display with white and bright LED backlight.

Power supply

Whenever you need more power and stability for your circuits, as well as different voltage levels, the breadboard power supply module must not be taken into account.
If you want a reliable DC regulated power supply without spending a fortune, this products are what you are looking for.

Oscilloscope

If you deal with electronics and you are willing to spend a considerable amount of money, then the best you can do is to buy an oscilloscope. Any signal that variates faster than a simple multimeter can measure, will be out of your scope without an oscilloscope. This is the case for most of the signals an electronic circuit generates!

Two valid alternatives

Oscilloscopes are available for different prices and features, here I just want to link you to a couple of them, that I consider the best buys for their respective prices:

- Rigol DS1102E: the cheaper one, featuring 100MHz of bandwidth, 1GSa/s sample rate, 2 analog channels and USB. This is the best choice if you want a quality and capable device without spending too much (I’ve been using this oscilloscope for years and I can give a very good feedback).
- SDS1202X-E: A best seller, featuring 200MHz of bandwidth, 1GSa/s sample rate, 2 analog channels, USB and a big 7” LCD display. This oscilloscope is a little bit more expensive compared to the Rigol DS1102E, but it’s worth it if you are not satisfied by a small screen and you need some more advanced features.
